As I browse through websites and articles to inspire me on what to write about next, I came across a link who introduced me to this awesome little girl. Molly.
Molly is a young girl from the Mathare slum in Nairobi, Kenya. She’s one of 20 million children around the world who receive a meal in school every day thanks to the World Food Programme. In 2011, WFP gave Molly a small video camera to record scenes from her life. Her school, her family. Her friends. How she sees her world. Watching this video made me realize a lot of things and made me thankful for the life I am living now. But somehow, I felt the need to do something about it. About Molly’s condition. About the condition of 20 million other Mollys all over the planet. But how? How can a single individual like me do something about an issue even larger than life itself?
I kept myself immersed in those thoughts while I wandered about World Food Programme’s website. Voila! The answer right infront of me. And something someone like a mere me can do. WFP’s site is full of ways to get involved on helping the 20 Million Mollys and most of them you can do just infront of the computer, without too much effort and too much of your time. Here’s the list :
1. Take the Hunger Quiz – Take the quiz here and feed a child. No matter what score you get (I got 1 out of 5. Stop laughing) you are sure to hand off proceeds. Don’t forget to fill out your name and contact information to seal this deal.
2. Add a banner to your site. – Yep. Upper right corner of this page please. Yes that’s it. Want some for yours? Check it out here.
3. Play Free Rice – Woohooo! Who would think playing games could help feed the needy? Some brain games to keep you sharp while giving you the opportunity to help. One correct answer = 10 grains of rice donated. After 2 days of playing I have donated 1,410 grains of rice. What are you waiting for? GAME ON! :)
4. Meet Molly – Yep, your encounter with Molly herself will help feed a child a day. Take a glimpse of Molly’s world, take a short quiz and another child is fed. I got 5 out 6. Yes, I sincerely watched her video.
5. Students and Teachers. – Get resources for the classroom and campus. Raising awareness starts with you.
6. Donate – If you have the capacity, please do so. Nothing is more rewarding than to be able to help those people in need, especially the earth’s future, which are the children like Molly.
There you have it. If you’re looking for a more productive way of spending your day in front of the computer aside from the usual, these are worth doing. Plus the more you spread the advocacy across various networking sites, more children are fed. I hope you take a few minutes of your time to meet Molly and help World Food Programme End the battle against hunger.

We learned from Biology 101 that our body is made up of around 50-60% water, and water is essential to human survival mainly because it is a vital nutrient to the life of every cell, as it acts as a primary building material of life. Ideally, we need 8 glasses of water a day. Sometimes though, we find it very hard to comply with that simple life rule especially with all of those junk foods around- Soda, artificial juices, liquors, coffee and the like. I used to treat my coffee like water, like every time I felt thirsty or felt the urge to drink, I make coffee or I buy coffee. I try to practice drinking water but sometimes, it really gets “boring”, until recently when a friend (follow her on wordpress : thegoddessofdiscord.wordpress.com) introduced me to her new healthy practice – that is instead of the regular water, she makes Lemon Water. Water with a twist. :)
It wasn’t long before I followed her footsteps after learning what this awesome drink can do for me. Aside from making cold water more refreshing she said lemon water can actually help you lose weight, and after a little more interest in it I found out that it does a little more than just aid weight loss.
Lemons are packed with vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fiber.
Because of how hard lemon juice can be on the enamel of your teeth, it’s important to dilute it with water of any temperature (though lukewarm is recommended). Drink it first thing in the morning, and wait 15 to 30 minutes to have breakfast. This will help you fully receive the benefits of lemon water, which are listed below.
Here are some benefits of Lemon Water from Lifehack.org:
Vitamin C is like our immune system’s jumper cables, and lemon juice is full of it. The level of vitamin C in your system is one of the first things to plummet when you’re stressed, which is why experts recommended popping extra vitamin C during especially stressful days.
As already mentioned, lemons are high in potassium, which is good for heart health, as well as brain and nerve function.
Lemon juice not only encourages healthy digestion by loosening toxins in your digestive tract, it helps to relieve symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, burping, and bloating.
It helps flush out the toxins in your body by enhancing enzyme function, stimulating your liver.
It also helps relieve toothaches and gingivitis (say wha?). Because the citric acid can erode tooth enamel, either hold off on brushing your teeth after drinking lemon water or brush your teeth before drinking it.
The antioxidants in lemon juice help to not only decrease blemishes, but wrinkles too! It can also be applied to scars and age spots to reduce their appearance, and because it’s detoxifying your blood, it will maintain your skin’s radiance.
Lemons contain pectin fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings.
If you drink lemon water on a regular basis, it will decrease the acidity in your body, which is where disease states occur. It removes uric acid in your joints, which is one of the main causes of inflammation.
Lemon juice provides your body with energy when it enters your digestive tract, and it also helps reduce anxiety and depression. (Even the scent of lemons has a calming effect on your nervous system!)
I didn’t believe this until I tried it, but replacing my morning coffee with a cup of hot lemon water has really done wonders! I feel refreshed, and no longer have to deal with that pesky afternoon crash. Plus, my nerves are thankful.
Warm lemon water is the most effective way to diminish viral infections and their subsequent sore throats. Plus, with the lemon juice also boosting your immune system, you’ll simultaneously fight off the infection completely.
For those who weigh less than 150 pounds, squeeze half a lemon’s worth of juice into a glass of water. If over 150 pounds, use an entire lemon’s juice. You can of course dilute the lemon juice more, depending on your personal taste.
Not only are the benefits of lemon water endless, it’s one of the most substantial yet simple changes you can make for your health.
So what are you waiting for?
Head to your nearest super market or fruits vendor and get a load of those lemons. These are the kind of “lemons” that will definitely keep you going :)
It took me a while to recover from this experience. It was both a disappointment and a relief. I’m sharing this experience to share light in the situation in case you find yourself in the same tight spot.
We were invited by Hotel Astoria representatives via phone for a “free buffet dinner” and free hotel accomodation valid for 6 months after supposedly winning a weekly raffle at shell after a PHP 500 gas up. I was definitely excited. Who wouldn’t be? The buffet was scheduled September 21, 7:30 PM. We were told to proceed at their receiving area at in front of the SM Mall of Asia Department Store. This was where they held their buffet. Upfront I was disappointed, expecting a lavish, fine dining venue but our company cafeteria looks way better than Astoria’s. The room was filled with a couple of people finishing their dinner, some already in the presentation proper, a team of dining staff, some men dressed in blue barongs (at first glance I thought they were security personnel) who turned out later to be sales rep managers, with a big participation on the surprise we were in for that night. Also noticeable were posters of their branches brandishing Boy Abunda as the endorser. I didn’t pay too much attention on the other details as I was already poised for dinner.
We were ushered to an empty table and was requested to fill out some forms, which noted that to avail of the free accomodation gift check, we have to stay for a 90 minute presentation about Club Astoria and their services. as soon as we were seated, one of the guys in blue approached us to verify the signed information on the form, and reiterate about the 90 minute presentation to be able to claim the prize. (Sneaky, eh.) Again, we answered yes. He seemed satisfied with that so he left us so we could “enjoy our dinner first” (finally! this was what I came for anyway).
Ok. So – dinner. The much-awaited FREE buffet. There was Chicken Inasal, fried Pork Liempo, Bangus Relleno, Pasta alfredo, rice, some Salad, bread and butter, and a cake + some fruits for dessert. I had a bit of everything. Food was bad. They were already cold. The pork was rock hard. Nothing special on the rest of what’s on the menu. I can cook better and that’s for sure. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything more for a free bargain.
After an hour we spent eating dinner, a lady approached us and asked if we were ready to proceed with the 90 minute presentation. Since we wanted to go home early we know we should get it done and over with as soon as possible. “Lhene”, the assigned “presenter” ushered us to another table where papers were everywhere and a laptop sits visible, ready for the coming show. Again, she made it clear that we need to stay for the 90 minute presentation in order to avail of the free accommodation we supposedly won in the raffle. Of course at that point we already felt obliged so, on with it.
The focus of her presentation was mainly to ask her guests if they are frequent travelers. From then she would present to you the benefits of the “exclusive” Club Astoria membership: a week ownership of a deluxe/1BR/2BR unit at Astoria Plaza, other perks and privileges such as free membership to RCI (Resorts and Clubs International), some exclusive getaway packages. Minimal maintenance fees which is waived for the first two years. (PHP 8,800/year). You really have to sit and bear with her up to the last minute for you to hear the actual membership price : a whopping PHP 400,000 something for a 30-year contract for a 1 bedroom suite, not to mention a PHP 50,000 on the spot down payment. Honestly, I knew the actual amount would be pricey but a think it was a really good investment. The way Lhene had presented her piece was quite clear and I am positively convinced that managed the right way, this would be a wise investment. However, it was the PHP 50,000 that was stopping me. I certainly did not have that amount of money and I am not sure if i’m willing to let go of such an amount in a single transaction – I still don’t have the guts to risk that much. So I told Lhene and her manager my concern. They didn’t look happy about it. It was 11:00 PM and the other couple had just finished their presentation and set off, leaving us the only party under negotiation. They got back to us and offered us a studio unit instead, amounting to PHP 182,000 total investment payable in two years (PHP 3,900 monthly amortization) with a PHP 18,200 upfront downpayment. This was certainly a good catch. I definitely wanted it but I did not have PHP 18200. They might have noticed and since it was getting late, they agreed that I bring back a PDC the next day. So without further ado, all the papers, contracts, terms have been printed in a jiffy. I made sure I read everything before I signed them. I was so convinced and happy that finally, I’m gonna have my own investment. We wrapped up at 11:30 PM. Went out for a few drinks and slept soundly.
The next day however, i became anxious of my decision. I called out friends and asked for advise. Guess what? One businesswoman friend was aware of Time Sharing and warned me that if I wasn’t too sure I should stay away from it. Confidence breaker. But then I realized, I haven’t done any real research about Club Astoria membership or any other time sharing properties. And I felt guilty of not using the power of technology in my hands when I had the chance last night, a few clicks of my phone an d I would have found out. What a shame. Anyway, so out came my laptop and searched away. All I found were a lot of disappointed members who for some reason, lost confidence in what they signed for upon reading the blogs or threads, or somehow realized that the monthly fee was too much for them and wanted to back out. Unfortunately and the sadder part of the story, signing up meant that there is a non-refundable PHP20,000 which is the cost of legal processing and handling. So even if they back out, the 20k will be left to Astoria no matter what you do. I’ve seen some file cases to DTI only to be dismissed more than once for the same claim. It’s said that, Club Astoria actually earns from the withdrawing clients. But so far, I haven’t read any comments from actual members who are earning from this kind of investment. All I’ve read made me change my mind. I was lucky enough not to have money to pay upfront because, they didn’t have any amount to get from me. I cancelled my membership.
Somehow this is a disappointment and a relief to me. i’m happy that I didn’t add this as a priority financial obligation but somehow sad that I didn’t try knowing that there isn’t anything actually negative written about it aside from the non-refundable 20k, which was clearly written in black and white.
Anyone who can share any positive or negative Time Share experiences?
